Mount Prospect Introduces Styrofoam Recycling Initiative to Reduce Waste and Protect the Environment

Residents of Mount Prospect can now recycle Styrofoam at the Public Works facility at 1700 W. Central Road. This new recycling initiative aims to reduce the amount of Styrofoam waste that ends up in landfills, ultimately assisting in environmental protection.

The village was awarded two grants to purchase a foam densifier, which will allow the public works department to process both packaging and food service foam into reusable and resalable foam ingots. This machine will simplify the processing of Styrofoam and allow for more efficient recycling of the material. This is a significant step forward for Mount Prospect because Styrofoam is notoriously difficult to recycle due to its lightweight nature and lack of biodegradability.

The items that will be accepted for recycling at the Public Works facility include foam packaging materials from televisions, appliances, computers, and furniture; foam coolers; and food service foam like egg cartons, trays, takeout clamshells, cups, and plates. These are the most common types of Styrofoam that touch every aspect of people's lives. This shows that there is a lot of potential in the Styrofoam recycling industry, but it has not been fully tapped.

Overall, this is a positive step forward for Mount Prospect, and it is hoped that residents will take advantage of this new recycling initiative. Recycling Styrofoam will help to reduce waste and protect the environment, and it is a small step that can make a big difference in the long run. As a Recycling specialist, INTCO Recycling has been following the development of the industry and the implementation of relevant policies. For areas like Mount Prospect, INTCO is very supportive of doing local self-recycling because it will lead to long-term growth. Styrofoam recycling will make even more of a difference: In addition to solving the current problem of Styrofoam accumulation in the city, it will improve the environment, create more jobs, and open up new possibilities.
