A Styrofoam Densifier Will Be Installed in the Transfer Station of Henderson County

In America, it’s normal to hold a Styrofoam recycling activity. The frequency of holding a Styrofoam recycling activity depends on local conditions. In some counties half a year, some once a year, some once every two years. In the past, Henderson County has held a Styrofoam recycling event every two years, and Henderson residents actively participated each time. Coupled with the increasing publicity of Styrofoam recycling, residents have begun to actively want to recycle Styrofoam, and are no longer satisfied with the biennial recycling event.

According to an employee of Henderson County Solid Waste, the most common request from residents is for Styrofoam recycling. Since all kinds of commodity packaging will now give priority to Styrofoam, especially those fragile or furniture, electrical appliances, etc. And food and drinks are sometimes packaged in Styrofoam. Therefore, residents' homes have a lot of waste Styrofoam in the village that needs to be disposed of. In past recycling activities, residents know that landfilling or burning Styrofoam is irresponsible and harmful, and Styrofoam can be recycled. Over time, Styrofoam recycling awareness has taken root in the minds of residents.

But, as other cities fear, simply collecting waste foam from various communities and shipping it to recyclers is expensive. Logistically, shipping undensified Styrofoam is inefficient and freight companies are expensive. Storing and preserving Styrofoam containers and packaging ahead of the annual recycling event is a challenge for many residents.

How to solve the above problems? Instead of sending Styrofoam away with expensive shipping costs, local recycling centers can recycle waste Styrofoam by themselves. Henderson County Solid Waste received a $40,000 grant from the Foodservice Packaging Institute’s Foam Recycling Coalition to add a Styrofoam densifier to its transfer station for year-round recycling. A Styrofoam densifier is especially important throughout the Styrofoam recycling system. A densifier can reduce the volume of Styrofoam to 1/50 of its original size. And compressed ingots will have more recyclers willing to buy. Soon Henderson County Solid Waste will use the money to purchase a Styrofoam densifier to provide Styrofoam recycling services to approximately 49,000 local households.
