How Computer Manufacturers Can Recycle PE Foam Packaging Waste

Computers, servers and electronic components are often protected with PE foam during transportation. Once the products are unpacked, this packaging can quickly take up space in production areas and warehouses. For manufacturers generating PE foam regularly, recycling begins with volume reduction. Turning loose foam into dense material makes it easier to store, transport and send for further processing.

The Need to Recycle PE Foam Packaging

PE foam, also known as EPE, is made from polyethylene and can be processed into recycled plastic. Recycling this packaging reduces the amount of general waste leaving the factory and keeps usable material in circulation. Loose PE foam contains a large amount of air. Even when a warehouse has collected a considerable volume, the actual weight may still be low. Reducing the foam onsite allows more material to be stored in the same space and transported in each load.

One US computer and server equipment manufacturer previously sent its PE foam packaging to a local recycler. When that recycling outlet closed, foam began to accumulate at its facilities. The company needed an onsite PE foam recycling solution that could prepare the material for further recycling.

PE Foam Recycling with Foam Densifier

The manufacturer used a customized GREENMAX foam densifier M-C200 at one of its US facilities. The machine crushes the PE foam and feeds it into a heated screw system. The material is melted and extruded into dense ingots, reducing its original volume by up to 90:1.

This changed how the factory handled its packaging waste. Large containers of loose foam were replaced by compact ingots that required much less storage space. The factory could collect more PE material before arranging transportation, making each shipment more efficient.

After seeing the results at the first facility, the manufacturer began using GREENMAX foam densifiers at other locations. The equipment was adapted to the PE foam generated and the working space available at each site.

Turning Densified PE Foam into New Products

After volume reduction, the PE foam ingots can be sent to a recycling plant for granulation. The recycled pellets can then be used as raw material for suitable plastic products.

The recycling route is clear: loose PE foam is reduced into dense ingots, processed into recycled pellets and returned to manufacturing. A GREENMAX foam densifier completes the first stage at the source, making the material more practical to move into the next stage.

INTCO Recycling may purchase qualified densified PE foam according to the material condition, available quantity and current purchasing requirements.

FAQ
