In France, Citeo Decides to Recycle Styrofoam Packaging

As more and more national and international environmental organizations began to establish regulations and initiatives for the Styrofoam Waste Disposal Program, many companies began to actively respond to these policies. For example, AGEC, a French law on the anti-waste circular economy, includes requirements for recyclable waste. As a hot new addition to the recycling industry, Styrofoam is also becoming more visible to recyclers. And Citeo, a non-profit company that aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging and paper, recently announced that it has selected the Indaver project and a plant to recycle Styrofoam packaging. The news also attracted more people's attention.

The Ecological Organization of the Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) sector for household packaging has allocated at least 10,000 tons of PS waste per year between these two players. The announcement marks the first step toward a yogurt can recycling channel. The Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Act (AGEC) set a target of 100% recycled plastic by 2025, while the 3Rs of May 2021 require all packaging "to have an operational recycling channel by January 1, 2025 ". And since September 2020, the PS25 consortium, which brings together producers and users of this packaging, in particular, has been working on developing the recycling sector. Therefore, Citeo's move also released a new signal: the Styrofoam packaging recycling industry will gradually expand, and more companies will join in like Citeo.

For Styrofoam packaging recycling, there are two main options: chemical recycling and mechanical recycling. Chemical recycling of Styrofoam packaging requires a catalyst to carry out a chemical reaction, and this process still produces a lot of carbon dioxide. In addition, chemically recycled Styrofoam packaging has high requirements on the environment, temperature, and catalytic ratio. Therefore, the entire chemical recycling process is not as simple as imagined. As an expert in Styrofoam recycling, INTCO recommends mechanical recycling of Styrofoam packaging. Compared with chemical recycling, mechanical recycling only needs to choose a suitable machine. For example, the GREENMAX StyroStyrofoam densifier can easily shred and heat-melt the Styrofoam packaging, and finally process ingots and sell them to recyclers. Many recyclers are purchasing ingots, and INTCO is one of them. Moreover, INTCO has a complete Styrofoam recycling industry chain. We purchase waste Styrofoam packaging and compressed Styrofoam, sell Styrofoam recycling machines, and process waste Styrofoam into various recycled plastic products.

In France, 100,000 tons of Styrofoam packaging are sold annually. As the French started to separate Styrofoam packaging from the waste stream, the packaging was collected and is now recycled to make coat hangers or plant pots. These efforts in Styrofoam packaging recycling have been seen by the world. In the United States, the United Kingdom, and more European countries, Styrofoam packaging is also recycled in large quantities. In terms of improving the environment and saving resources, Styrofoam packaging recycling will contribute more.packaging, and finally process ingots and sell them to recyclers.
