The University of North Carolina Wilmington Continues to Grow Its Polystyrene Recycling Business

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has been running its recycling program since 1989. UNCW has always held the concept that almost everything is recyclable, as long as it is disposed of in the right way, and all waste can go to the right recycling point. As a result, UNCW works hard to divert all kinds of valuable waste from landfills. After learning about the recyclability of polystyrene, UNCW applied for a grant from FRC and became the 27th grant recipient. In response to the growing demand for polystyrene recycling services, UNCW has decided to continue to develop and expand polystyrene recycling.

From the initial small-scale recycling to the numerous recycling points set up both on and off campus, the recycling business of UNCW has grown significantly. The first funds received were used to purchase a polystyrene recycling machine. With the help of machines, recycling polystyrene becomes easier and simpler. As we all know, polystyrene is very large but very light, so all the polystyrene collection points can be easily filled. This situation also requires UNCW to transfer the collected polystyrene waste as soon as possible. With the polystyrene recycling machine, all the waste can be pretreated by the machine, turned into polystyrene ingots, and then sold to recyclers. The recycling efficiency of polystyrene has also improved.

UNCW recently received an additional $9,627 grant from the Foam Recycling Alliance (FRC) to purchase four containers to collect polystyrene foam. Because 99% of the bubbles UNCW collects come from outside the university, it's all due to good publicity. UNCW also plans to add a second polystyrene recycling machine and donate it to the university. Not surprisingly, the polystyrene recycling capacity will be doubled. UNCW also works with local businesses to help them dispose of polystyrene. UNCW's efforts in the area of polystyrene recycling deserve praise and learning from other municipalities and organizations.

With the development and progress of the times, we will eventually face the fact that recycling plays an important role in sustainable development. The benefits brought by polystyrene recycling are far more than that: reduce environmental pollution, save limited resources, and increase market economy... INTCO Recycling is a leader in the polystyrene recycling industry, providing more information, examples, and recycling solutions for those who might be wondering. We expect more people to join us.
